Jerusalem Divorce Lawyer

This article provides you with information about how to choose a Jerusalem divorce lawyer and what to consider in this process.  All issues regarding family and divorce fall under the authority of the Israeli Ministry of Justice.  Often divorce involves division of assets, custody of children, visitation arrangements, and more.

Rabbinical and Family Courts

Contrary to what you see in many Western countries, family law in Israel is subject to religious law, which has its own particularities depending on your religion.  For Jews, divorce in Israel tends to go through family and rabbinical courts, both of which have similarities, although there are a few differences between them.  While people who are Jewish but not religious do not always wish to go through the rabbinical courts, this court can often operate much more quickly than the family court.  You can discuss which option is best for your case with a lawyer.

How to Choose a Jerusalem Divorce Lawyer

Israel has one of the highest numbers of lawyers per capita, and since lawyers are free to practice any field of law, you often have many options to choose from.  During our discussions with clients, we often recommend that you consider a few criteria when choosing the best lawyer for your case.  Family law addresses very sensitive issues, and choosing a lawyer who can carefully guide you through the process is important.

  1. Experience: Does your lawyer specialize in the field of law you are seeking services in, and do they have a proven track record of successfully helping other clients with similar cases?
  2. Location: While it is not always the most important element, it can be helpful to meet with a lawyer in a location that is convenient for you.  Does your lawyer have offices in a central area close to your home, work, or another place you can easily access?
  3. Language: It is often easiest to address legal issues in a language that you are most comfortable speaking. This is why, in our law firm, we have lawyers who speak Hebrew, Arabic, English, French, Russian, Spanish, and Dutch.
  4. Time: Does your lawyer have the time and availability to take on your case?  Sometimes, law firms will take on cases even when they don’t have the time to address it immediately. Thus it’s important to clarify that your lawyer is available to work on your case.
  5. Cost: It’s important to ask about the legal fees at the beginning of the process.  While appeals and additional steps can certainly result in higher fees than initially anticipated, it’s important to discuss the fees up front and ask what further fees and steps might be necessary.
